PocDoc signs deal with 55 GP practice sites (Modality)

Modality partnership

PocDoc, the UK's leading digital diagnostics company, has partnered with Modality Partnership to bring unlimited cardiovascular disease (CVD) screening to its GP practices. Half a million patients, from Birmingham and Walsall to Hull, Lewisham and East Surrey, can now be offered a heart check by their own practice.

A different question for GPs

In most practices, every diagnostic test carries a price, and that price quietly shapes who gets tested. This agreement removes it.

Modality's clinical teams now have unlimited access to the Healthy Heart Check under a single annual arrangement. The question stops being "can we afford to test this patient?" and becomes "does this patient need a test?" Screening follows clinical need, not the cost of each check.

It also removes the other barrier: equipment. Traditional testing means buying, installing and maintaining analysers. The Healthy Heart Check needs a smartphone or tablet.

How the Healthy Heart Check works

A full cholesterol profile, BMI, NHS Heart Age and a ten-year cardiovascular risk score (QRISK3) from a single finger-prick, delivered to a smartphone in under ten minutes, with results able to flow into the patient's NHS record and a clear pathway to follow-up for anyone at risk. No lab. No GP wait.

The check is now available across every postcode area of the UK.

The evidence behind the test

Accuracy is the first thing a clinician asks about any point-of-care test. For cholesterol, it's judged by total analytical error. The NHS follows the US National Cholesterol Education Program limits: 9% for total cholesterol, 13% for HDL and 15% for triglycerides.

PocDoc's technology met those limits in two studies. The first, using venous blood, was published in the peer-reviewed journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics: X in 2024, with PocDoc's own scientists among the authors. The second, using finger-prick blood, has been submitted for publication and is under review.

Why it matters

GP practices are under growing pressure to find and manage cardiovascular risk, on budgets that aren't growing to match. When testing depends on expensive kit and per-test fees, prevention is the first thing to get squeezed.

Modality is recognised for pioneering new models of NHS care. Its decision to adopt the Healthy Heart Check at scale shows how preventive screening can be delivered within existing NHS services without adding to the workload on stretched GP teams.

Built for the 10 Year Health Plan

The partnership reflects all three shifts in the government's 10 Year Health Plan. It moves care from sickness to prevention, by finding risk before it becomes a heart attack or stroke. It moves care from analogue to digital, replacing analysers with a phone. And it keeps care in the community, inside the GP practices patients already know.

What the leaders say

Vincent Sai, CEO at Modality Partnership, said:

"General practice is at the heart of preventative healthcare, but the way we deliver diagnostics needs to evolve if we're going to meet the growing demands on the NHS. We need solutions that are clinically robust, easy to implement and capable of reaching patients at scale without adding unnecessary complexity or cost.

"Our partnership with PocDoc gives our practices a new way to take a more proactive approach to cardiovascular prevention. By making screening more accessible and removing the constraints of traditional testing models, we can help our clinical teams identify risk earlier and support better long-term outcomes for the communities we serve.

"We believe innovation in primary care should be practical, scalable and focused on improving patient care. This partnership reflects that ambition and the important role technology can play in building a more preventative NHS."

Steve Roest, CEO and Co-founder of PocDoc, said:

"For too long, primary care has been held back by diagnostic models that simply aren't designed for the realities of the demands on today's NHS. Expensive equipment, complex installations and restrictive contracts have made it unnecessarily difficult for GP practices to deliver preventative healthcare at the scale patients need.

"Our technology was built to change that. By removing the traditional barriers to testing, we can give primary care teams the tools to identify cardiovascular risk earlier, reach more patients and prevent serious conditions before they develop.

"Modality is one of the most respected and forward-thinking organisations in NHS primary care, so its decision to adopt our technology across its practices is a hugely significant endorsement of what we're building. This partnership demonstrates the potential for a fundamentally different approach to diagnostics, one that puts accessibility, prevention and patient outcomes first."
